I had the privilege to meet David Clutterbuck, the father of coaching, at an in-depth three-day team coaching training in Lithuania. I was lucky to learn about the keys to successful team coaching and how to create sustainable, long lasting results for the organization. Inspired by his knowledge, I interviewed him on the importance of teams in organizations and on his thoughts about coaching on a global scale.

Most importantly, Prof. Clutterbuck believes that it is essential to help people in organizations towards a more effective dialogue, the skills for which are often lacking. Most often, this inefficient dialogue leads to conflicts and the whole team suffers. The skill of communication is one of the teams’ key skills because a proper dialogue builds trust.
Clutterbuck believes that team coaching is important, because everything we do is dependent on teams, “Even successful individuals need a supportive team behind them to thrive. However, our abilities to work in a team are constricted.” This is why team coaching creates an environment where high performance is possible.

The future of team coaching will revolve around individual coaches and facilitators in companies who will train themselves in order to become master team coaches. “The future will bring about a shift from external coaching towards internal coaching,” says Prof. Clutterbuck.

“In order to thrive, you have to pay close attention to the quality of the team”, he explains. “Don’t focus merely on the team leader but instead on the team’s ability to collaborate and deliver better results than earlier. Determine when a group is enough – and when is a team needed.”  There is a clear need for team support, especially because the main focus of HR trainings is to support individuals.

Finally, it is important to remember that working in teams is an instinct for us, just like communication. Everyone can talk or be together as a team. However, not everyone have the skills to work together efficiently. Think about talking: almost everyone can talk  – but how many of us are able give a brilliant speech? It’s the same with teams. This is why both individuals and teams need team coaching to enhance their skills.
